non metals do not react with water or steam. why?

In their fundamental state, non metals exist in molecular form, it means each atom is forming a covalent bond with another, for example S8, C in graphite (covalent bond sp2 hybridation). This means that they are quite stable in elemental form. Water do not react with them because it cannot affect directly the form in wich those atoms are bonded, remember mostly of those bonds are really hard to break, so they require lots of energy to make this happen.
