How to deal with griefers and abusers
How to deal with griefers and abusers
how-to-deal-with-griefers-and-abusers
Examples of unacceptable behaviour:
* OOC rudeness, either blatantly OOC or disguised as IC. This includes derogatory comments on gender, size, race, religion, sexual orientation and so on.
* IC hostilities when it has no In Character merit and without reasonable provokation (IE, someone opens fire on you for no reason whatsoever. Of course, mass murdering psychopaths may still exist in the future, but that is no excuse to go on a killing spree. Not liking your hair colour or the rip in your trousers doesn't qualify, either). Whether HP meters are worn or not doesn't matter.
* The use of griefing tools (IE the visitor throws you into the stratosphere, deforms you, cages you, and so forth).
* Interruption of ongoing RP by ways of spamming, acting exaggeratedly OOC or any of the acts above.
* Rezzing high-prim/laggy/blatantly OOC etc objects in the sim.
* Justifying any authorative/bullying/abusive behaviour with that "they have permission" or that "they have the right".
* Just plain being an asshole.
So. You're being griefed/abused/whatever. What to do?
(Note: If either of the owners are online, your first course of action should be to IM us and tell us to get our asses over to the sim, lickety-split.)
Well, first of all, in all cases except rezzing of objects, politely ask the person/persons to stop what they are doing. Don't be rude, don't provoke them, don't fight fire with fire. Just ask them nicely to cease what they are doing. If you start a flame war, chances are they will return in greater numbers. That in turn makes our day a whole lot less with the happy, and nobody wins but the griefer.
Unfortunately, in many cases, this won't work. That's where your inner journalist should wake up for a little bit. Make sure to document as much as possible. Log IMs and local chat. Take pictures. Make note of the chain of events. Even if you can get a hold of an online officer, documentation is important. Sometimes griefers/abusers complain about the treatment they receive, and claim to have had good reasons for their actions. In those cases, documentation is critical.
(Note: Filing an Abuse Report with Linden Labs, especially if you have photographic and/or IM evidence, is recommended.)
As soon as a polite request to cease and desist does not work, IM an officer. The officers have the power to derezz objects, freeze, kick and ban avatars from the sim. Talk to them. Calmly. They will help you out.
If no officer is online, please leave the sim until the abuser is gone. We will now repeat what we said above: do not provoke them or start a flame war, as it can spiral out of control.
Whatever the end result of the debacle may be, always leave us, the owners, a message. Send us the logs, the pictures, your eye-witness account, anything you have. Do not worry about the TOS-breach of sharing IMs. Anything that is shared stays with me and the information will only be used to deal with the incident.
In the case of rezzing of obviously inappropriate objects, and if a subtle hint doesn't help: please contact an officer, who will then come around and decide whether said object(s) qualify for returning. Please note that she sim has autoreturn enabled and set to 60 minutes, so any problems with objects should be gone within an hour.
Here's who you can contact in case of an emergency:
Owners: Gabe Yazimoto and Duncan Cooperstone
Officers: Emma Ditko, Jai Raghilda, Zade Karu, Calina Tereshchenko
Okay, I think that about covers it. If you have any questions regarding this, please don't hesitate to IM Gabe or Duncan in-world.
