Apple Varieties

Unknown apple (seeking help for identification)

    Comments

This is a small apple or large crab which I would like to find the identity of. Avereage size across is about 2 in (50 mm) and the largest specimens reach 2.5 in (60 mm). Note the long and thin stem, which is quite characteristic of the variety, although some apples do have a shorter stem as the one on the top left. Usual harvest date is by Sept 15-20 in my orchard near Quebec (zone 4), about with Lobo and about a week or two before McIntosh. It probably is an old named variety as I got it from an old orchard where the trees had been obviously planted in rows. Another feature of the variety is the whiteness of the flowers (much less pink than usual apples). It is a tip bearer. It is not very sensitive to scab although it does get some on bad years. It is very flavorful, not too sharp and has some astringency. Production is quite irregular and alternates. Ripening is also uneven, a good number of apples fall before most have become ripe.
I like to use this apple for cider, for its flavor and its tannin. Density of the juice is quite variable - I have measured it as high as 1.060 in good years and as low as 1.047. Acidity is quite nicely balanced around 0.7% (as Tartaric) in avereage.
If you have an idea of what this apple could be please let me know! Thanks.

It is a little difficult to tell without a scale in the picture, as well as the cut section, but my first reaction was that it looks awfully like Lady Apple, (Pomme d'Api in French). Against this ID are the harvest in September, (Pomme d'Api is a very late harvest - November here in Nova Scotia, zone 5)
    David,
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the cut section, but as of the size, these are approximately 50 mm across (2 in). The Api apples that I have seen were quite different, much redder - and the grafts of Api that I have attempted surely didn't grow as well as this unknown apple...
