Although this site has more to do with hands on experience, we all presumably owe alot to external research and writings. Despite the fact that the computer age has brought us a wealth of information, it does indeed pose some problems. First off, the sheer volume to be sorted through is daunting to say the least. This is where the growing number of members in this group can help. When an individual spends 2 hours looking for a good study online, or 2 hours into a 1920's ag book- that means 2 hours I don't have to spend looking. Secondly and less likely to be remedied is access to recent good and affordable information. In the last 2 years, more and more of my online inquires to questions have led to a host of scientific journals and organizations which allow access only by subscribers. OK, you say, just subscribe. Well, a yearly subscription rate goes from a modest 900 dollars up to 10,000. Huh? While I understand a research staff needs to be paid, i can't help but feel annoyed. The information is often EXACTLY what I am looking for, but sadly out of reach. If any of you in the scientific community out there knows how the general public an find cheap access, i think it would be greatly appreciated. To clarify, the entities are ones like Actahort and Springerlink, but there are tons of them. They compose generally 75% of the page 1 googles when you a brainy search on anything botanical. If there is a good space for listing studies and resources on this site, please comment.

One good way to gain access to some of the scientific literature is to go to Land Grant University Libraries. For example you can go to the Life Sciences Library at Penn State University and look through things like Agricola and CAB Abstracts in some cases you can look at certain journals through the library on line. You may need to become "A friend of Penn State" by going to https://fps.psu.edu/mkuser/index.html and applying. You chose your password and they mail back an digital id number you can use The Life Sciences library is located at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/lifesciences.html If you look under the Agricultural Sciences bar you will see Horticulture listed that leads to the search engines. I would assume other Universities would have similar sites Hope this helps Rob
