Zuccalmaglio
Zuccalmaglio was bred in Germany, a cross of Ananas Reinette x Pupurroter Agatapfel, and released in 1878. Its original name is Von Zuccalmaglio's Renette. In the literature, it is considered as a high quality late apple, with little sensitivity to sickness, very vigorous and alternating.

This apple was held by Fred Janssen (one of the founders of NAFEX, now late), to represent the absolute pinnacle of apple perfection. In my own orchard it is OK, pleasant eating, but prone to both scab and insect attack.
March, 2010. Addition to above. I put a crate of these away in my cold cellar, (and to be honest forgot them). After 5 months storage in ordinary storage (no CA, etc.), they are excellent in quality, and have markedly improved in flavour - much sweeter and also more tasty. Still not a strongly flavoured apple, but I now appreciate what Fred was saying.
