Frostbite (Minn 447)
From Minnesota, this apple has been around for a while under the name Minn 447 and was named Frostbite in 2008. Seedling of Malinda. A small apple, bronze color, semi-late, with a peculiar nutty taste. Keeps about 4 months. Hardy to zone 3.
Picture from Claude's orchard, September 9, 2007, max size 64 mm across. You can see some Surround had been sprayed on these...

Unfortunately this one didn't meet expectations. None of the family members enjoy the "peculiar nutty taste" - we always seem to find another apple that we prefer close by, and the Frostbites never get eaten... (they however make an excellent conversation piece). Juice quite high in acidity and too low in sugar to be useful for cidre. Good for fresh juice however. Tree on Ottawa 3 is an excellent grower, easy to manage, productive. The apples ripen well, and are scab free.

This gem is a parent of Sweet Sixteen and Keepsake. My couple of grafts have been slow growing. The apple itself is very distinctive, having been described as like molasses, olives, and sugar cane, with aromatic crystalline flesh of an apricot-orange color.
