Red Baron
Red Baron (Red Duchess X Golden Delicious) was developed at the University of Minnesota in 1970. Bred for cold resistance (-50F by some accounts) and fireblight resistance. Reported resistance to cedar apple rust. Although it develops into a red skinned variety it is at the picking stage already at about 50% blush over its yellow-green ground color. Flavor is a nice sweet/tart balance and freshly eaten compares in juiciness and crispiness to the much applauded Honeycrisp(TM). Storage life is 4-5 weeks (longer in the best of storage conditions), ripening about the last week in September at 44.48 degees latitude in zone 3. This medium sized fruit is multipurpose, but prized mostly for fresh eating. Quickly oxidizing it not a good choice for slicing and salads. Tree is fairly vigorous. Not to be confused with the flowering crabapple of the same name.
