GROWER COMMENTS:
Claude Jolicoeur, Quebec, Zone 4
Fred Janson sent me scions of Glowing Heart in the spring of 1999, a few months before his death. This is an extremely vigorous variety. As all early apples, rather low in sugar and high in acid. Pleasant flavor. More useful for cooking than for eating fresh, and unfortunately, useless for cider. It makes a good conversation piece.
David Maxwell, Nova Scotia, Zone 5b (Wet Atlantic climate)
My own experience coincides with Claude's , except more so. In my damp zone 5b setting (coast of Nova Scotia), it is extremely scab prone. (4/5 in my assessment last fall, both leaves and fruit. (I have been keeping separate records of leaves and fruit). It does make a pretty apple sauce.
