Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing
5 Reasons Crowdsourcing is Stupid (100104) "But crowdsourcing is just one of the many tools we have at our disposal, and each tool is suited to particular kinds of applications. To simply adopt an idea like this without considering its suitability to the problem domain or to the desired results can be risky. To assist with critical thinking about crowdsourcing I have collected a few alternative viewpoints & list five reasons why it might not always be the best approach to adopt. Please note I do not agree with everything in the articles linked below – they are meant as a thought starter & to provide different perspectives on crowdsourcing (i.e. if you’ve got any issues with the articles please contact the author directly)."
Creativity's Brief Moment in the Sun (100101) "In the new "crowdsourced" economy, there will be one place where designers will continue to flourish. It will be with clients who do not know what they need. When they do know what they need, they will take advantage of the new economy. But when they don’t, they will need a enduring connection with a designers who gets who they are, who the consumer is, and what the culture is. They will need designers who deliver a larger package of knowledge, intelligence, and creativity. (To be sure, this is the way great designers always seen what they do.) The upshot?Designers should be cultivating the skills that enable them to deliver ideas and intelligence, not just design. (To be fair, this is what all design schools say they do.) This will take a new order of professional development. (It will mean that designers will have to be Chief Culture Officers, whomever else they are.)"
Britain's Conservative Party Offers £1 Million Prize for New Crowdsourcing Platform (091231) "Britain's Conservative Party plans to offer a £1 million taxpayer-funded prize for a website that can "harness the wisdom" of voters. The price will be given to the team that develops a platform that enables large groups of people to come together online to solve common problems and develop new policies. According to the Guardian, some of the ideas for this site include services that help to identify wasteful government spending or rate the quality of schools and hospitals. It is worth noting, though, that the Conservatives will only give this prize away if they win the 2010 elections."
