so here's a compatibility question:
i have one (1) recently ebay'd sugino AT crankset, square taper of indeterminate size
one (1) brand new totally beautiful surly long haul trucker.

what i don't have is a bottom bracket. how do i figure out what size i need so the taper is the right size and length and everything?

You need a "standard" English/ISO bottom bracket in threading (1.370x24tpi) and width (68mm). Here is a link with info about Sugino cranksets:

Looks like you can use a regular UN-73 (a great B but I don't know if taper length varies.
