Why are channels needed?
Players can use the chat box to talk in a specific channel.  Channels can be used for a group of friends to chat in private or to speak out about a trade.  There are nine default channels however channels can be created by players for friends and their guild.  A single player may not participate in more than nine channels at one time. 
Default channels:
There are a few basic channels that all players will start in, and several other "permanent" channels operated by the server that players may join.  Chat commands must be typed before your message.

<td>This is the only channel you cannot leave. Local chat is isolated to the map you are currently on. You will always be in this channel.</td>

This channel is a permanent channel that only exists if you are a part of a guild. This channel allows you to communicate with members of your guild. Players must join this channel to take part.</td>
