[OUT]Mapping for PWO
Making Maps for PWO
Note: This tutorial was taken from Kaine's Mapping Tutorial
For a map designed for PWO, a good source map is required. In this tutorial, I was currently working on Route 17, so THIS MAP currently served as my source. In general, the WEBSITE HERE is an excellent resource.

Save the image to your computer, then open it in an image editor. A free one I highly reccomend is GIMP

After opening the image, search it for a recognizable tile edge. I normally use trees that have no top, as I know they are two tiles wide, two tiles long, and at high zoom its easy to see where one starts and another begins. Select the tiles, and find out its pixel size in the source image. In mine, the whole tree is 32 by 32, which means Its half the width, and half the length it should be.

Now its time to do some math. I take my known size, the 32 pixels, and divide the length and width by it. Then, I multiply the length and width seperately, depending on distortions that sometimes happen inf only one direction. Since the distortion is exactly one half for both, I multiply the length and width by two.
In visual terms:
Length
2560 /32= 80. 80 x 2= 160
Width
384 /32= 12. 12 x 2=24
From this, I know my map dimensions are 24 X 160

Its Map Editor time.Do as the pictures do, but use the dimensions for your route. Once you've done that, your ready to map.

A special note for huge maps, like Route 17, do not scroll down at all until you have completed the area already selected. After, that, scroll down in half screens, so that you always have half the screen done, and half blank.

There are two map layers, base, and overlay. As a general rule, liking base tiles is a virtue. Overlay should be used where needed, and only where needed.
However, overlay must be used in certain cases:
- grass-not in overlay, pokemon cant appear
- water-not in overlay, fish cant appear
- fences, walls, and forests-not in overlay, players walk right through them

Pressing the box beside the overlay and base selection brings up your new favoutrite toy: The Tiles. Scrolling down, you can see every tiles used in the game to date. Clicking one sets it as your selected tile, and you can use it to draw on your map. Holding your mouse button, and moving from left-right, top-bottom, will select all the tiles in that area. Use this mainly for buildings, and other multi-tile "stamps"
