Secret Area 1 is a useful area that can be found fairly early in the game. It is most well-known for the fact that it is the only area in the game in which you can encounter and possibly catch wild Bulbasaur and Bellossom.

It is also seen by many players as an ideal area for training to defeat Brock, as the tall grass is home to Pokémon generally higher-leveled than others encountered early on. The fact that the area is also home to wild grass-types such as Bellsprout and Tangela make it especially useful in diversifying one's Pokémon party.

The area is found by heading west from Viridian City, beyond Route 22. It is not based on any existing area in the original games, and thus a dead-end in the handheld games - Route 22's brick road - has become an entrance.

An interesting detail to take note of is the silent Doorman Staunch. This elderly NPC stands watch in front of an as-of-yet unexplored cave.

Who knows just how much more useful the Secret Area will become once Staunch leaves his post and allows entrants into the cave...
