Pardon me as I do a definition search for the word "protocol." Let's see, I'm checking out Merriam-Webster:

Nope, not that definition.

OK, I'll go with this one.

I was a Squidoo Squid Angel for the first time, well over a year ago, for a term of six months. Thankfully, I was granted my "wings" so to speak for my second term just recently. It is because I am a Squid Angel that I am talking about my take on "protocol and promotion." This is my take, my personal commentary.

I, along with my fellow angels -- 32 of us! -- are tasked with certain daily responsibilities, which I take seriously and conscientiously. On any given day, I am busy reviewing and visiting hundreds of lenses. As of this writing, I have rated nearly 6,200 lensmasters' lenses. That sounds like a lot; but you know there are some lensmasters with much more than that under their belts! It takes a lot of time and thought to do that many ratings/visits. Oh, I'm not even taking into account those lenses that I've visited that are not ready for ratings -- don't know if I would be up to 9,000 lenses or more, but I suspect so.

Well, the personal commentary part is this. Since I am a Squid Angel, as in my previous term, I find myself less and less wanting to send a Squidcast or post in the forum to encourage visits to my lenses. I don't know why, call me funny [yes I know I need more humor in my lenses]; but I've scaled back on that kind of 'self-promotion.' I've scaled way way back on my twitter tweets too. I've got some new followers and don't want to flood them out.

So, what about YOU? Are you a Squid Angel too and have a take on this? Are you doing the same amount of promotion nowadays as previously? Or, have you too scaled back in certain areas.

Because I am Squid Angeling, much of my extra time [if there was such an animal] is now occupied with those duties and leaving me with not enough time for my blogging. When I'm blogging, I love this form of expression. Note to self, "make more time for blogging."

November 2009 Squidoo Payout

I've received the November 2009 payout from Squidoo to my PayPal account about a week ago. It's a little over $95 and not a bad payout overall. The payments were made rather early this month which is of course very nice. As usual you can find the payment proof screenshot below.

Squidoo payout tiers for November 2009 were as follows (note the rather generous $13 for the 1st tier):

High LR: $13.03
Medium LR: $2.12
Low LR: $0.10

The InfoLinks tiers were as follows:
Tier 1: $2.94
Tier 2: $0.50
Tier 3: $0.03

I don't expect much higher payouts in the upcoming months. While my visitor counts are up, the LR of several lenses has fallen down. For example, a lens with 325 weekly visitors only has #6,959 LensRank. Although I guess these are just isolated cases rather than an effect of a LR algorithm tweak.

Squidoo Friendly Social Bookmarking Sites

Only recently have I really begun to realise the importance of bookmarking my Squidoo Lenses.

Looking at some of my worst lenses for traffic, almost all of them have not been bookmarked enough. It's not so much the back links that they are missing either. Although the back link total is not brilliant, it's not that bad either.

So, why aren't they doing that well?

All I can think of is that I just haven't submitted them enough to social bookmarking sites mainly because of my fear of being labelled a spammer. This is because, if I find a good site, my first thought is not to share it with everybody on the internet but to save it in my personal bookmark folder for future reference.

So, I kind of feel that bookmarking sites are surplus to my requirements unless I'm using them to promote my own sites, hence the problem I mentioned above to do with spamming.

However, it seems they desperately need the exposure (not so much the back link, although this is important too) to do well.

So, it's a quandary; do I bookmark or not?

I've featured here a good Squidoo lens that will give you some of the bookmarking sites that accept Squidoo Lenses for submission. Just to give you a head start :)

I've built lenses for many different reasons in my Squidoo journey so far, but I'm getting more and more into the area I love most, which is personal growth and spirituality. Holiday Giving - Donate to Animal Charities

Where does the time go? I can't believe that 2009 is almost coming to an end and that the holidays are right around the corner. When one thinks about the holidays, one can't help but think about gift giving, and in this poor economy about the less fortunate.

In addition to people, my thoughts go out to all the pets that have been abandoned nation wide. Locally, I mourn for all the wild animals that have been displaced when local contractors, who were high on the post Katrina building boom, bull dozed hundreds, perhaps thousands of acres of natural habitat. Today, because of the poor economy, much of this scarred and ruined land sits bare, adding to the flooding problems and to the water pollution of local streams and rivers. The land is now unsuitable as habitat for the wildlife and will probably grow up with invasive exotic plants that many of the animals can't eat.

As Squidoo lens masters, we have not only been writing lenses (pages) about nature and the outdoors, but we have also been dedicating a portion of each lens to organizations, like the National Wildlife Federation and the Humane Society, that help animals and nature. Other lens masters are doing the same and we have created some directories of some of the lenses and the lens masters who created them.

Senior Squids Animal / Nature Directory
As the motto says: Senior Squids may be older, but are no less bolder. When you look at the quality and quanity of the lenses by Squidoo lens masters who are 50 years of age or older, you find the cream of the crop.

This will be the first in a series of directories that list lenses, written by members of the Senior Squid group which focus on an aspect of Nature. This directory will focus on lenses about the Animals or Fauna of our beautiful Earth. We know you will enjoy the lenses that are listed here. They are a fine example that we are not getting older, we are getting better.

Fresh Wonders Nature Contest
Welcome to the third weekly contest and tutorial lens of the new Fresh Wonders of Ning. This week's contest will feature Animal and Nature lenses.

Bookpile: October 2009

How to Train Your Dragon and How to Be a Pirate - First two books about the heroic misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a viking in training of the Hooligan tribe. Picked them up because there's an animated movie coming out next year and I wanted to catch the story. (And make a lens on it, yes.) Really enjoyed them. The art looks like something a kid (or me!) would draw and the stories are just plain fun. There's humor that might go over the head of a kid but gave me quite a few chuckles.

Change the Way You See Yourself - Partner to previous book on asset-based thinking. Basically just applied it to three more areas. Maybe when I conquer the other three, I'll come back to this one. :-)

The Alternative Hero by Tim Thornton - First novel from this guy and made me feel like I really missed a lot of music in the 80s-90s. Decent book, not raving about it. Fascinated by the trip back into a world before the internet and even wide distribution of PCs and printers. Hard to remember the days when you couldn't just ask all your Twitter friends for a recommendation.

The Draco Tavern - OK, I love short stories. I love Larry Niven. But this collection wasn't working for me. Not that I didn't love the stories, but ... . Collecting all the ones about the same place just left me wishing for a novel rather than vignettes. You get tired of reading the description of the specific alien types every single time and the tavern just seemed ripe for more depth. Great setting and some interesting things raised for discussion, but possibly shouldn't be taken in one sitting.

The Spiderwick Chronicles - We watched the movie recently and left it thinking that the book was likely better. And maybe if the book(s) were more than the movie, that would be the case. Finished the first book in an hour, got nothing more than was in the movie so am not proceeding to the rest of them. Maybe if I had read the books first, I would have been more impressed with them. (NOTE: this is one time when being an adult reviewing a kids book isn't a good thing. These would be fabulous for the right kid.)

Lateral Thinking - had to abandon this one. Just wasn't in the mood for what turned out to be a textbook. Could never focus enough to make it very far.

To most Squidoo lensmasters, the mention of the word angel conjures up squid angels. There are many a lens written by squid angels usually, and sometimes about squid angels who have come a calling to a lensmaster's lens and blessed it. But what about ALL those squid angels out there who are not trumpeting their blessings to lensmasters' deserving lenses?

I've held off on this discussion as there have been plenty of SquidU Forum posts about angels dropping by to bless numbers of lenses. And, there have been many a lensmaster asking for angels' blessings. I personally have taken the stand to NOT announce each and every one of my blessings.

Blessings to You My Dear has been my signature blessing from when I first earned my wings -- and I was more inclined in the early days to state that I had blessed a lens. But, in my new capacity, I've become a quiet angel. For the most part, I will definitely leave a comment on a lens along with my rating. But, I am blessing lenses in silence -- not trumpeting in the lensmasters' guestbooks that I have been there.

Oh, did I mention that sometimes I come upon a lens without a guestbook? Oh dear me. Please lensmasters, be sure to include a guestbook on your lenses. ;)

Back when there were only a few squid angels on the job, it seemed more worthy to make mention that a blessing had been left. However, today, on any given day, you can come across lenses with multiple angels blessings being apparent from the guestbook comments and many lensmasters who have been Touched by an Angel -- a plug for a related lens of mine.
