I used to like Fiona Rae - whacky, colourful and energetic canvases - full of
life. Other favourites are Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Michael Porter. The
latter had a lovely exhibition in Purdy Hicks last March. His work always
inspires me. It depicts the natural world underfoot - hedgerows - fields -
little woods.
My series of paintings 'Gardens of Delight' and 'Escape' were very influenced
by the exuberant glass sculptures of Dale Chihuly. This American sculptor has
made huge chandeliers hanging over the canals in Venice as well as colourfull
floats and larger than life vegetation, all made of glass. After I had seen his
exhibtion in Kew Gardens I was very motivated and inspired leading to a
wonderful, sustained period of work.
