1. Get the whole story. Interview the person/people making the claim. Ask lots
of questions about the details. What happened? How did it happen? When did it
happen? What led up to the event? Listen and try to look for anything they may
be hiding (Were there any alcohol/drugs consumed? Do they have a reason to make
up the story for attention? Possible mental illness.) 2. Generally, someone
making a supernatural claim already has a predefined notion of the cause
(ghost, alien, angel, ESP). Don't tell them they are wrong, but offer up
alternate possibilities. Coincidence, natural phenomena, practical jokes and
hoaxes are the most common causes. 3. When no obvious reasons exist to explain
the occurrence, try to recreate the event if possible (and record them with
both video and audio). For ghosts, duplicate the same settings and people at
the location. For ESP, have them demonstrate. 99.99% of the time, nothing will
happen and the investigation ends with simply an unproven claim. 4. Repeat the
test. The more times you can duplicate the results, the more likely you can
determine the scientific cause of the event. If the paranormal event does get
recreated, then take the evidence and duplicate it to have a backup. Contact
the nearest large university and see if they have a department that is able to
test and verify the claims. Tips Recreating the event does not mean something
supernatural has happened. It simply means that you have something viable to
test. Look for things like fraud or manipulation of the results. People have a
hard time admitting they are wrong. Even if you find a perfectly reasonable
reason for the event in question, some people will reject your explanation in
favor of the supernatural one. Warning!! Use extreme caution when dealing with
fanatical believers of the supernatural. Exposing a hoax can cause someone
already mentally imbalanced to become dangerous. Make sure you have others with
you during all stages of testing for both safety and verification of results.
The paranormal can't hurt you, but people can.
