How should we approach adding metadata to the Deep Zoom File Format (DZI)? DZI is an XML format and therefore metadata can be added through third-party element sets using XML namespaces. For author, copyright etc. it's basically standard to use the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. Additionally, I'd like to express links to the source image data of a tiled multiscale image. Therefore, I've already experimented with my own format for a while. Adding source image data to the multiscale image descriptor is great because it would allow users to view and download image in their entirety, e.g. Inline Multiscale Image Replacement, just as they already can with any image using their browser. For the core format I've been using DZI because it's simple and already has a small tooling ecosystem. I want to contribute to a future with minimal multiscale image format proliferation and therefore I'd like to start a discussion here on how to best integrate metadata such as source image information into the DZI format. I think its wise to keep the DZI as small as possible since the XML file needs to be completely loaded as a prerequisite for any activity on the image. Another issue is that most copyrighted content owners would require at the very least a copyright tag on each tile. Although this would add to the size of each tile, there may not be a way around this. A possible compromise would be to keep most of the metadata in a separate XML file alongside the DZI.
