Drag to Pan
Drag to Pan

For simple applications, a drag can simply pan the world around.  When object dragging is also necessary, however, conficts arise.  One approach is for dragging on an item to move it, and dragging on the background to pan.  Another approach is to make pan happen only with an extra key held down, or in a certain mode.  It depends on the relative frequency of the different actions anticipated.

At Ahead (http://www.ahead.com) we've had a few issues regarding how to pan and not least how to give Novice users an easy understanding of what a ZUI is.

1) We use the traditonal Drag via mouse click when in View mode, but we combine it with a mouse click to center, meaning that the canvas will center on a mouse click anywhere in the view port. However, this is deactivated when dragging and panning in a traditional way. The reason for offering both ways of panning is to give the novice a quick understanding that there's more on the screen than what they see.

2) In our edit interface we use SPACE KEY + MOUSE CLICK & DRAG in order to prevent that items that are placed on the canvas aren't accidentally moved in our Adobe InDesign style layout editor. The move to center functionality is not activated in edit mode.
